Sensoria brings fitness tracking to socks

Sensoria is bringing fitness tracking to garments other than bracelets and pedometers with its new line of smart socks.

The new Sensoria Fitness Socks help track your fitness thanks to the special sensors stitched into each sock. They’re able to track you number of steps, speed, calories burned, weight distribution, cadence, and foot landing technique. While the socks can obviously track day-to-day activity, they’re especially helpful for runners looking to track of change their form. The foot landing tracking might help runners looking to switch from a heel strike to a mid-foot strike, which barefoot runners will tell you could lead to fewer injuries.

Of course the socks can’t track and transmit all that data by themselves. That’s why the socks come with an anklet that attaches magnetically to one sock or the other. After attaching the sensor you can sync all the information to your smartphone over Bluetooth. While all of Sensoria’s images use the iPhone app, the socks work with Android smartphones running 4.3 Jelly Bean or higher.

Unfortunately, the sensor can only track one foot at a time, so you’ll either want to switch the sensor from time to time, or just trust that when you perfect your form with one foot the other foot follows along.

Like many high-end fitness tackers, the Sensoria Fitness Socks aren’t cheap. A bundle that includes the sensor and four pairs of socks will typically cost $259. You can get a $60 discount before the retail launch, though, knocking the price down to $199.

The Sensoria Fitness Socks come in four colors: white, black, pink, and blue.

Sensoria is also working on special sports bras and shirts with sensors for release in January and February, respectively. There’s no pricing on those yet, though they may be cheaper at first because Sensoria won’t make sensors for those. Instead users will have to buy third-party heart-rate monitors to get the most out of those garments.
