Last night Samsung took the wraps off of a quartet of new Galaxy tablets at its CES 2014 press event, but largely absent from the shindig was any news relating to the company’s smartphone efforts. That doesn’t mean that Samsung’s got nothing cooking in its kitchens, though, as a new leak has shown that the Korean firm may be testing out a new custom user interface for its handsets.
Three new images posted by prolific leakster @evleaks claim to show a custom Samsung smartphone UI that the company is purportedly “exploring” at this time. The overlay is quite a bit less cartoonish that previous iterations of TouchWiz, featuring new app icons and a pastel color palette. Also included is a sort of user summary that’s reminiscent of HTC’s BlinkFeed, complete with news on a friend’s check-in and the score of a baseball game.
Overall this new Samsung smartphone UI has a refined, more mature look that I’m digging. TouchWiz has caught quite bit of flak over the years for having a cartoony, toy-ish design, but this leaked overlay definitely has a more grown-up feel to it. Right now this user interface is reportedly just being tested inside of Samsung’s labs, so it’s unclear if it’ll ever actually make it out of there and appear on a shipping product, but there’s certainly a chance that Samsung could feel the same way about it that we do and decide to push the new UI out at some point in the future. Good thing that we’ve got this leaked screenshots to ogle while we wait to see what Samsung decides to do.
