It was a year that was sprinkled with record-busting camera sensors and big phones packed in plastic shells and razor fast processors; all of which combined to blow a hole the size of Neptune in every tech geek’s mind.
Having waded through the sea of ultra-fast processors and awe-inspiring sensors, we picked out the seven smartphones that are worth every penny - And the multiple bank robberies that it’ll take to afford them:
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Although
not a favorite with those who prefer skinny jeans, Samsung’s flagship
phablet, the Note III paved the way for further dominance of the
smartphone market. One review praised the Galaxy Note 3 for sticking
close to the winning formula; “It enlarges the Super AMOLED display of
the Note II to 5.7 inches, adds a bombastic 3GB of RAM, raises the
camera resolution to 13 megapixels, and simultaneously trims the fat so
it can be a millimeter thinner and a shade lighter.”
iPhone 5S

Its hard not to wax too poetic about the iPhone 5s design, is how one tech critic put it. When it comes to a new iPhone, it’s hard to maintain any degree of calm, as we’ve learnt. Tech critics applauded the Apple’s latest offering on its, “New space gray finish which is more visually striking than the black it replaces. With the iPhone 5s, Apple once again wins the right to claim the title of best smartphone available.”
Sony Xperia Z1
With its swanky glass front, new aluminum frame and a trail of busted water-resistance records lying in its wake, the Xperia Z1 has everything going for it. As Andrew Hoyle from CNET put it, “The Xperia Z1 is an undeniably beautiful piece of kit. The waterproof design helps keep it safe from all manner of liquids that would put an end to most other phones and its screen is better than ever.”
Nokia Lumia 1020
Nokia Lumia 1020
Kicking up the cameraphone war a notch is the latest cadet from the Lumia clan, the Nokia Lumia 1020 whose 41 megapixel camera blew the competition right out of the water. The general consensus on Nokia’s flagship device remained that,"Nokia has basically set the bar for the rest of the smartphone imaging world – in terms of both hardware and software features,” while many set aside a special mention for, “The simply stunning photos that make the Lumia 1020 the ultimate cameraphone."
HTC One
HTC One
As the battle heated up between Samsung & Apple, HTC stepped into the battle rink with HTC One in tow, packed with sound enhancement in the form of HTC Boom Sound, dual frontal stereo speakers and Beats Audio. "If any smartphone has a shot at success in 2013, it's this one. The first time you see the One, there's a "Whoa..." moment. And after you hold it, and use it, that astonishment bleeds into awe. The One commands respect," raved critics.
Last but not the least this years Nexus ensures you get top class performance, durability and style with the real essence of stock android. The display is nice, performance is fast, Android 4.4 KitKat smoothes out the overall Android experience and, because it's unlocked, it's free of carrier bloatware and restrictions. It may not have the tremendous battery life of the LG G2, or the cameras you'd find in the Lumia 1020, or the build quality of the iPhone, but you're not going to be sacrificing too much with what you're paying for the device.
